Have you ever been caught in a situation where you to have to beg for time to stop? A situation where you have to summon all the energy and inspiration in the world just to complete a mountain of tasks in a matter of hours before the deadline? Or have you fallen into the trap of not finishing the responsibilities set upon you simply because you ran out of time because of constantly delaying? And in so doing, found yourself in a whirlwind of confusion and panic? If you answered yes to all of the questions above, then you have been an innocent victim of this silent yet sinister culprit- PROCRASTINATION.

Procrastination is often associated with laziness but surprisingly, this is not usually the case. Procrastination is the habit of delaying an important task by doing first the less complex, more enjoyable, and easier assignment. Laziness, on the other hand, is the unwillingness to take action. One might say that he is putting off a significant task because he is still gathering more ideas and enhancing creativity in order to create a “perfect” output. While this may seem like a reasonable excuse, it’s still an excuse. If we keep on procrastinating, we may lose focus, be demotivated, and eventually fall short of our goals and aspirations.

Below are simple yet practical tips on beating procrastination. Take time to digest the information and watch how it could positively transform your life.

1. RECOGNIZE THAT YOU’RE PROCRASTINATING. Cues such as filling your day with low- priority tasks, leaving an item on your To-Do list for a long time, even though it’s important, starting a high-priority and then going off to do something else, prioritizing trivial tasks some people request us to do over starting the more important duties at hand, and waiting to be in the “right mood” before tackling a task are sure proofs that we are procrastinating. Identifying, recognizing and accepting that a problem is present, is a big leap towards finding the solutions.

2. WORK OUT WHY YOU’RE PROCRASTINATING AND DEAL WITH IT. Knowing the reasons behind the habit will help us apply strategies that are “tailor-fit” to our situation. Perhaps you keep on avoiding the task because you find it boring and unpleasant. If that’s the case, commit yourself to take it out of the way by finishing it to make way to more enjoyable and exciting things. At some time, we tend to become disorganized. Poor organization can lead to procrastination. Organized people make a habit of preparing TO-DO lists and faithfully ticking off the items way before the deadline. There are also times that even the organized people procrastinate. One reason is that they may doubt their abilities producing the expected outcomes. They’d rather avoid the task than deliver a perceived “half-baked” output. One way of intervening this is to think about the benefits we can get after the completion of the task. If we are internally motivated and focused on the “prize”, then surely, wonderful things can unfold. Lastly, some people chose to procrastinate because of poor decision making. Not being able to decide which of the tasks at hand warrant a number 1 spot in the priority list is usually a ground for procrastination. One way of solving this is allocating some time in proper prioritization, taking into consideration your main objectives. Simply speaking, “begin with an end in mind”. If the destination is clear to you, then you will know which steps to take to reach it.

3. PRACTICE CONSISTENCE. To keep a flame burning, one must provide it with consistent fuel. The same principle applies to battle an undesirable habit like procrastination. Practicing the above techniques wholeheartedly and scaffolding it with the right attitude and dedication can lead to better and stress- free mindset.

So there you have it. RECOGNIZE THAT YOU’RE PROCRASTINATING à WORK OUT WHY YOU’RE PROCRASTINATING à DEAL WITH THE CAUSES à CONSISTENCY. With an unquenchable zest for quality work and faith in overcoming the problem, nothing is impossible.
