Furthering your education is often imperative for career advancement. However, it can become a juggling act when you try to balance your studies with a full-time job and a child or children at home. There are times when you’ll feel like tearing your hair out. Aaarrgggghhh! Can you get a chance to breathe?

It may seem like you have an insurmountable mountain to climb. However, there are 5 things you can do to achieve the right balance without sacrificing the steps you’re taking to further your education.

Time-Saving Techniques Must Become a Priority

Time has become a scarce commodity. You need to do everything you can to maximize your time so that you can give each area of your life the attention it needs. Some ways that you can do this include:

  • Meal prep on weekends. You may have already been doing this, but it becomes even more important now. Cook all the meals you’ll need throughout the week, portion them into meal sizes, and freeze them.
  • Hire someone to clean your home during the week if possible.
  • Ask your children to help out more around the home and hold them accountable, particularly your older children.
  • Carry your study notes with you so that you can study during your down times.
  • Create a manageable task list of things you must accomplish throughout the day. You can use an app such as Wunderlist to keep track.

Don’t Neglect the Power of Self-Care

There’s no excuse for neglecting your health and mental wellness. Ensure that you’re eating healthy meals, drinking lots of water, and spending at least 15 minutes each day to just relax and clear your mind. Make use of your school’s gym facilities so that you can get in at least 3 workouts per week, even if these workouts only last for 15 minutes. You can’t pour from an empty cup and your cup will become empty quickly if you don’t take care of yourself.

Use On-Campus Services

Your college or university will have on-campus services that facilitate student success. You just need to find them so that you can spend less time struggling and more time getting things done. One of the most common services on campuses is a student learning center where tutors are usually available to help students with assignments and other course-related issues.

Create a Family Calendar

Keeping track of everything can sometimes become a challenge. A family calendar can help solve this issue. As the name suggests, you’re keeping track of everything that happens with all family members, not just the children. Include important dates from school, such as your exam and assignment schedule. Explain to your family that you’ll need time to prepare for these exams and assignments.

The family calendar can be posted on your refrigerator. You can also use an app such as Google calendar to sync the calendar with everyone’s phones. The family calendar will only work, however, if you sit down as a family at the beginning of each week to prepare the upcoming week’s schedule. This meeting ensures that everyone is on the same page.

You don’t need to be a magician to manage your hectic life. It will take a lot of planning with and support from your family, but it’s possible. Don’t neglect to take care of yourself though in the midst of the mayhem. You’ll be of no use to yourself or anyone else if you end up in the hospital.
